The Light of Heaven's Night
Inspirations of Novalis' Light of Heaven's Night Poesy
Slipping in and out of dream The world did shimmer with strange Light. A Light that rivaled Day Star's gleam, Though it remained the depths of night.
Though night it was, the moon bowed low As handmaid to the true Selene, By whose Light was giv'n her pale glow, And veil with starry jewels does teem.
Began those stars in festival To pulse, and whirl, and leap, and sing. In response, all things sensible, Became as one heart taking wing.
Their rhythms, Love's great liturgy. A worship felt in flesh and bone. It welled in me sweet-bitterly, That Light into my depths had shone.
O world, that suffers in despair, Forgetting what is good and true. Seek that treasure, exceeding rare. That Flame of incandescent Blue.
